Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have quickly adapted to doing things online. Even two years later, many of us are still using digital channels for work, entertainment, and learning, and will continue to for the foreseeable future. MyMastery is a proudly South African online learning platform that has just launched, where some of the most influential people in various industries offer masterclasses on design, wellness, business, entertainment, cryptocurrency, and more.
Before we jump in, though, let’s look at some statistics.
Rising Interest in Online Learning
Online courses have soared in popularity with people looking to better their knowledge and skills. While there has been growing interest in recent years, being home a lot more because of the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of learning online.
- From the above graph, we can see that there has been a year-on-year climb in interest about online courses over the past 5 years.
- Interest typically peaks at the beginning of the year as people are motivated to develop or gain expertise.
- In January 2020, interest dropped to 55, however, we were in the early stages of the global COVID-19 pandemic. This is likely to have impacted people’s focus at this time.
- In contrast to other years, however, we saw overall interest increase and remain fairly steady throughout 2020.
- In 2022, interest in online courses in South Africa is at an all-time high according to Google Trends.
The most recent Digital 2022 Global Overview Report also indicates that South Africa has the second-highest usage of video for learning in the world.
While it may have started out of necessity, many have discovered that doing things via an app or the web can be more cost effective, efficient and convenient. All you need is an internet connection and a phone, tablet or laptop, and you’re set. Students and working professionals have unprecedented access to online courses, and are getting ahead of their peers. Don’t get left behind!
What is MyMastery?
MyMastery is a brand-new online learning, video-on-demand subscription platform proudly produced in South Africa. The brand’s mission is to entertain, inspire, and educate users through its content.
The People Giving the Masterclasses
The instructors are carefully selected to ensure that users get the most value from the classes. MyMastery partners with reputable industry leaders to share their knowledge, insights, and experiences. While the videos have a clear theme and structure to each lesson, the videos feel very organic and conversational, which makes it easy to follow and keeps the viewer interested.
While other international e-learning platforms may offer similar content, having South African masters share their expertise through a local lens makes the courses so much more relatable and relevant to South African audiences. Videos also offer subtitles in the most widely-spoken South African languages.
MyMastery Content
The platform currently covers various topics and plans to continue expanding its offering monthly. Well-established masters of their industry share their expertise through short but meaty videos. On average, each course is comprised of around 12 lessons of approximately 13 minutes in length. These lessons can be watched at any time, on up to 5 devices, and even offline via the app.
Each class has a write-up with a course overview, as well as a trailer covering what you will learn, which helps you make an informed decision about which class(es) you might want to do. The on-demand videos are beautifully shot and edited. The composition, lighting, and movement of each video are impeccable. This, combined with the charismatic instructors, animations, and music, keep viewers engaged throughout the class. The length of the videos is also perfect. They are just long enough to keep you edutained without it dragging on for longer than is necessary.
Courses also include a workbook, which follows the structure of the course, that includes information and tasks to do along the way. These workbooks are beautifully designed and are a useful summary of what is covered in the videos.
Each class has a distinct style, tying to the instructor and/or subject matter. So, if you choose the monthly subscription option, each class will be very different from the last, while maintaining the flawless production value.
Access to the MyMystery Platform
MyMastery can be used on a browser or app (available for both iOS and Android). Once you sign-up for a single class or monthly subscription, you will have access to your content. What I also found helpful is that the masterclasses can be cast to a Smart TV or speaker.
The platform is simple and easy to use and allows users to access the classes on up to 5 devices. MyMastery app users can also download their content for viewing offline.
Pricing
MyMastery offers two pricing options for users:
- For R495 per class, people can signup for a particular course of their choosing.
- If you would like access to all the classes available on the platform, then the monthly subscription of R295 is best.
There are also volume-based discount packages available for businesses, for which you’ll have to get a costing for via the website.
Gift cards for MyMastery can also be purchased on the website, which is a great idea to give someone with a particular interest.
Final Thoughts
I’ve loved using MyMastery and am very impressed by this truly world-class platform. Not only is it very easy to navigate, but the way each class is packaged is flawless from the write-ups to the videos. The length of the lessons is also perfect – the topics are covered comprehensively without dragging on, which means you stay engaged. The instructors are knowledgeable and share their expertise in an informative but easy-to-understand way. I look forward to seeing what courses are added in the future.
