When I first walked into the theatre, I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Jungle Book. With little media coverage around this production, I was curious to see what VR Theatrical had created. From the moment I stepped into the foyer, draped in vines and foliage, I could tell this was going to be something special. The attention to detail started before I even sat down—and by the time the final bow was taken, I was thoroughly impressed.

This The Jungle Book South Africa review highlights how the show blends contemporary aesthetics with classic storytelling, setting it apart from other adaptations.

This production of The Jungle Book is an exciting, modern musical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale. It keeps the heart of the original story but distances itself from the well-known Disney version. Instead, we get an edgier, contemporary take that feels bold and refreshing, brought to life by a passionate cast and a creative production team.

A Theatre Experience That Immerses You from the Start

One of the most memorable things about this show is how immersive it is. Before the play even begins, you’re transported into the jungle through thoughtful design choices. The theatre’s foyer was decorated with vines and jungle-inspired elements—a small but effective touch that set the mood before stepping into the performance space.

Inside, the set design was simple yet striking. Scaffolding draped in vines created the core jungle aesthetic, with actors skillfully navigating the structures throughout the show. While the scaffolding was a creative way to bring the jungle to life, I did feel it sometimes broke the suspension of disbelief. That said, the grungy, urban-inspired wardrobe and aesthetic suggested this was an intentional design choice, giving the production a unique identity.

One particularly impressive set piece was the large rock structure, which doubled as the wolves’ cave and Shere Khan’s domain. It was cleverly designed for dynamic use, allowing actors to scale and move across it seamlessly. The way this single piece was repurposed in different scenes added depth to the world without overcomplicating the stage.

Costume Design: Modern, Minimalist, and Effective

Rather than relying on full animal costumes, the show took a more contemporary approach, using modern clothing with stylistic touches to reflect each character. The wolves wore hoods, Baloo had a preppy look, and Shere Khan’s wardrobe exuded power. This minimalist but effective design helped differentiate characters while maintaining the production’s edgy aesthetic.

Performances That Brought the Jungle to Life

The heart of any theatre production is its cast, and The Jungle Book delivers strong performances across the board. Each actor poured energy into their roles, bringing these beloved characters to life in a way that felt both familiar and new.

One of the standout aspects of this adaptation of The Jungle Book is the impressive performances, particularly Jonathan Raath’s Shere Khan. Jonathan Raath’s portrayal of Shere Khan was a standout. His performance was theatrical, animated, and just the right amount of camp, making the villain both menacing and entertaining. He owned every moment on stage, giving the character a presence that captivated the audience.

The ensemble’s versatility was also impressive. With a relatively small cast, actors played multiple roles, shifting between characters effortlessly. The mischievous monkeys, for example, were chaotic and fun, adding a lively energy that had the younger audience members fully engaged.

The Magic Behind VR Theatrical

Having seen several VR Theatrical productions, I knew to expect a high standard, but this one still exceeded my expectations. The company, founded by Wessel Odendaal and Jaco Van Rensberg and their team, has consistently delivered creative and compelling shows (Avenue Q, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Mystery of Irma Vepp), and The Jungle Book continues that tradition.

It’s also exciting to see the talented Daniel Geddes stepping into the director’s chair. Having built a strong reputation as an actor, his transition into directing is something to watch closely. This production proves he has a strong vision, and I’m keen to see how he continues to grow in the industry.
