I recently attended the opening night of Swingin’ Las Vegas at Montecasino and had an absolutely wonderful time! As a fan of live music, I expected to enjoy it, but I was blown away by how much I loved it, largely thanks to the incredible swing genre.. Like me, I know that Swingin’ Las Vegas will have adults of all ages tapping their feet along. It’s only on for 8 shows so here’s why you shouldn’t miss it!

The Stage

The stage may be modest in terms of physical changes, but the transformative lighting and backdrop create an immersive set. From the music stands in front of each musician, to the overall lights of the stage, the audience is swept up in the energy of the show. You can’t help but feel enthralled by the ensemble. This is very much a concert as opposed to the theatrical experience with a story, that you may be used to. This format is another reason that reiterates why the orchestra is the hero of the show.

The Music/Band

The Johannesburg Big Band posing on stage for Swingin' Las Vegas at The Teatro, Montecasino

If you enjoyed Swingle Bells in December 2023, you’ll be familiar with the Johannesburg Big Band, the powerhouse behind this production. Swingin’ Las Vegas features an 18-piece orchestra, predominantly composed of brass instruments, delivering jaw-dropping performances. The high energy of the show is truly world-class, so much so, that you’ll feel as if you’re watching a show in Las Vegas! I’d even say that whether you’re very familiar with swing music or not, you have a good time, guaranteed.

The Singers

The vocal talent includes some of South Africa’s top performers, creating a star-studded lineup that adds a dynamic flair to the show.

Corlea, Timothy Moloi, Craig Urbani, and Harry Sideropoulos performing in Swingin' Las Vegas at The Teatro, Montecasino

Craig Urbani, who you may know from We Will Rock You and, more recently, The Sound of Music, opens the show by channeling the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, delivering Elvis Presley hits with unmatched energy and charisma.

Corlea dazzles audiences with her powerful renditions of classics like Hey Big Spender and more contemporary numbers like Amy Winehouse’s Valerie. In fact, when I heard Valerie performed on the radio as a teaser for the show, I got so excited and knew it would be a great experience.

Timothy Moloi captivates with his smooth vocals on timeless tracks such as I’ve Got You Under My Skin. As you’ll see, he has a sophisticated swagger that makes his performance all the more engaging to watch.

Harry Sideropoulos adds his charismatic touch with playful performances and really reaches those soulful low notes.
