There has been particularly more conversation about LGBTQ+ rights this year compared to what has been seen previously. No matter where you look, especially during this month (Pride Month), everyone seems to be talking about the LGBTQ+ community. Brands have climbed on board to educate consumers, streaming services have released LGBTQ+ centric series and artists have used their platform to share their support. The most recent news that has sparked conversation is Eugene Lee Yang coming out as gay.

About Eugene Lee Yang

The Try Guys –  Keith Habersberger, Ned Fulmer, Zach Kornfeld and Eugene Lee Yang

You will probably recognise Eugene as one of The Try Guys – the one with cool hair. The YouTube channel started as a BuzzFeed initiative that was well-received by audiences around the world. The popularity of the 4 men exploded, so much so that in 2018 they decided to move away from BuzzFeed to focus on The Try Guys brand.

You can find out more about that story here.

On 15 June 2019, The Try Guys published a video entitled I’m Gay – Eugene Lee Yang. The video is a thought-provoking piece combining Eugene’s creative abilities to tell a powerful story about what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community as well as the struggles that are faced in today’s society.

Two days later, a follow-up video was uploaded, which is essentially a documentary of why and how the video was made.

Eugene has not held back since the video was dropped. He has been active on his personal social media accounts and in talking to other media outlets to make sure his coming out journey is heard.

The news has been met with some negativity but mostly positive feedback and support for his brave move that was more than just a coming out video but also a commentary on some salient LGBTQ+ issues.
